Planning new facilities for China

Hua Shan Hospital
Shanghai, China

Project scope:

Hua Shan Hospital, located in Shanghai’s Pudong district, is the primary teaching hospital of the Fudan University Medical School and the hub of a growing hospital network. The group entered into a relationship with then-Harvard Medical International focused on the planning and design of new hospital facilities and the development of the network’s key hospital leadership.

Collaboration with PHMI:

PHMI played a lead role in planning of Hua Shan’s new Pudong Hospital, a 327-bed facility encompassing 425,000 square feet. This project was an opportunity to pilot a transitional model of health care designed to help state-run providers migrate to a delivery model wherein quality management is central to clinical practice. This planning model is designed to support cost-effectiveness and flexibility in response to a rapidly evolving economy where inordinately low reimbursement rates are misaligned with rising social expectations.

During the planning process for the Pudong facility, medical planners from PHMI worked closely with the Shanghai Ministry of Health to revamp outdated building regulations in order to support the new model of care. Hua Shan opened the Pudong Hospital in 2006.
